In the Presbyterian tradition, the role of the congregation is important in choosing leaders. We choose our own pastors, and we elect elders. The elders (who aren't necessarily old!) work with the staff to oversee the total good of the church. At Avondale, we have 18 elders. Six are elected each year for a three-year term. Each elder also has responsibility for a ministry team. Presbyterians have a reputation for being organized. Actually, we really do believe that God's will often is discerned through a collective decision-making process.
