Ministries beyond Avondale

We believe the Holy Spirit empowers every member with gifts, and those gifts can be used to help other people. Here are some of the activities in which Avondale members participate:

CROP walk:      Avondale has been a long-time participant in the CROP walk, which raises for hunger-fighting efforts around the world.

Habitat for Humanity:     Avondale has a building crew for the Charlotte chapter of Habitat.  Our crew tends to be “jack-of-all-trades” crew instead of specializing.

Room in the Inn:     Avondale is a part of the Room of the Inn network, which helps the homeless during the winter. One night a week, Avondale opens its campus to feed and provide a warm bed for up to 11 homeless people.  The Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte is our contact agency.

Special offerings:     We participate in the One Great Hour of Sharing and Joy Gift offerings of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). In addition, special offerings may be used after natural disasters.

Five-cents-a-meal:     This offering is scheduled for the last Sunday of every month. With this offering, we help to stock food pantries in the Charlotte area.

Work camps and weekend trips:     Since 1991, Avondale adults have spent a week in the Appalachian Mountains and have built a house. In recent years, the work camp has been in Harlan, Ky. Also, Avondale dispatches teams for weekend work when a natural disaster hits within a day's drive.

Meal ministry:  Twice a week, members of Avondale distribute food to people in Charlotte.
